UNICEF Voices of Youth-“Abandoned and destitute…children devoid of all the basic necessities in life are taken advantage of... they are exploited at the hands of people in numerous ways leaving them scared, helpless and vulnerable.''

For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help. He will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death. He will rescue them from oppression and violence, for precious is their blood in his sight.

  — Psalm 72:12-14 NIV

The World Food Program

says, “The poor are hungry and their hunger traps them in poverty.” Hunger is the number one cause of death in the world, killing more than HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined.

    UNICEF key facts say:

Poverty undercuts a family or community's capacity to care for children.

             Globally:

  • 180 million children work in the worst forms of child labor.

  • 1.2 million children are trafficked each year.

  • 2 million children, mostly girls, are exploited in the sex industry.

What specific benefits does a child receive through sponsorship?

The children Crown of Christ serves receive, among other things: the opportunity to hear the gospel and learn about Jesus, educational opportunities and help; health care, hygiene training and supplementary food if necessary; a caring and safe Christian environment to grow in self-confidence and social skills; personal attention, guidance and love.

Why does Crown of Christ focus on individual child development rather than broader community development work?

We have discovered that changed circumstances rarely change people's lives, while changed people inevitably change their circumstances.

Community development is important work that addresses the external circumstances of poverty and is an important complement to our work. Our primary focus is individual child development that recognizes the God given value and potential of each individual child. Many of these children will grow up to become positive influences in their own communities.

How long should my child sponsorship last?

Crown of Christ  child sponsorship offers you the opportunity to stay with a child for a number of years, usually through the school year in which the child reaches the 6th grade. While we hope that you will be able to continue in your support of your sponsored child until he or she completes the Crown of Christ program, we recognize that sponsors' circumstances sometimes change. You may discontinue your sponsorship at any time.

Please understand that a sponsored child's circumstances may change, too. For example, sometimes families move beyond the reach of Crown of Christ's program and children have to leave the sponsorship.

We will inform you as quickly as possible if any such circumstance affects the child you sponsor, and we'll offer you the opportunity to support another child in need of your help.

If I must discontinue my child sponsorship, what happens to the child I'm helping?

If you need to discontinue your child sponsorship, we will immediately look for a new sponsor for your child and continue the child's sponsorship support without interruption.  You can discontinue your child sponsorship at any time.

Can I give my child a gift, card or something I bought?

Yes. You may purchase a small gift, card, etc. give it to us and we will transport it to them. Larger or heavy items will need to be purchaced in country.

Worldwide 600 million children live in extreme poverty. Almost half the world — over 3 billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day.
